Supplement buyers now start with AI
Picture a pharmacy buyer looking for new sleep-support brands. Or a start-up searching for a private-label gummy manufacturer. Meanwhile, a product developer is comparing collagen suppliers.
However, these tools don’t show ten results. They give a short answer with a handful of names. If your brand, manufacturing service or ingredient isn’t among them, you may never make the shortlist.
In a recent test for medical device manufacturers, we asked ChatGPT and Perplexity the same buyer-style question. Each gave ten companies, and not one name appeared on both lists. AI visibility is unpredictable, and it is wide open. That is exactly why nutraceutical brands that act now can win a place in the answers their buyers see.
This practice is often called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) or Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Here is how it works for supplement and functional food companies.
Check where you stand: questions your buyers ask
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google in a private browser window and ask the questions your customers would ask. Note who appears, how often, and how each company is described.
If you are a contract manufacturer or private-label producer:
- “Best contract manufacturers for food supplements in Europe”
- “Private label supplement manufacturers with low minimum order”
- “GMP certified gummy vitamin manufacturers for brands”
- “Probiotic contract manufacturing in [your country]”
If you are an ingredient supplier:
- “Top suppliers of clinically studied magnesium ingredients”
- “Who supplies vegan omega-3 for supplement brands?”
- “Best collagen peptide suppliers for B2B”
If you are a supplement brand:
- “Best supplements for sleep support sold in European pharmacies”
- “Leading nutraceutical brands for joint health in Canada”
- “Alternatives to [your main competitor]”
Then ask each tool: “What does [your company] do?” Wrong products, outdated certifications or no answer at all are clear signs your information isn’t reaching AI tools.
Five ways to get on the AI shortlist
- Say exactly what you do, in plain words. “GMP-certified contract manufacturer of gummies, capsules and powders for EU supplement brands” gives AI tools a clear fact to repeat. “Your partner in wellness innovation” does not.
- Give every product or service its own page. List formats, certifications (GMP, ISO 22000, organic, vegan), minimum order quantities, markets served and lead times. After all, clear, structured facts are what answer engines quote
- Answer buyer questions directly. Add an FAQ to each key page with the questions your sales team hears every week. Write each answer in two or three sentences, starting with the answer itself.
- Earn mentions on trusted sites. Trade publications, association directories, trade show exhibitor lists (such as Vitafoods Europe) and partner websites all help AI tools confirm you are a real, established company. Keep your description identical everywhere.
- Publish proof. Case studies, clinical study summaries and product development stories give AI tools concrete material to cite, and give buyers a reason to trust you.
Stay within the health claims rules
Of course, more visibility also means more people read your claims, including regulators.
- In the EU, use only authorized health claims from the EU Register of nutrition and health claims, worded as approved.
- In the US, structure/function claims need the FDA disclaimer, and disease claims are off-limits for supplements.
- In Canada, claims must match the product’s Natural Product Number (NPN) licence from Health Canada.
- Separate company facts from product claims. Statements about your certifications, capacity and experience carry far less risk than health benefits.
When in doubt, have your regulatory or legal team review new content before it goes live. In fact, accurate, compliant information is what AI tools trust most.
Frequently asked questions
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? AEO is the practice of making your company easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews to find, understand and recommend. It focuses on clear facts, direct answers to buyer questions and trusted third-party mentions.
Is AEO different from SEO? AEO builds on SEO. SEO helps your pages rank in search results; AEO helps your company appear inside AI-generated answers. Most companies need both, because buyers use both.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers? It varies. Fixing your website content can show effects within weeks for tools that search the web live. Building the third-party mentions that AI tools rely on usually takes several months.
Can supplement brands use AEO without breaking health claims rules? Yes. AEO works best with factual, specific and verifiable information, which is also what EU, US and Canadian regulators expect. Keep product claims within approved wording.
What does a digital marketing agency for nutraceutical brands do? A specialized agency helps supplement brands, contract manufacturers and ingredient suppliers reach buyers through SEO, AEO, Google Ads, social media advertising, websites and branding, while respecting the claims rules of each market.
